Pixel Density vs Resolution

Gaming has greatly evolved since the first 2D games. Modern games feature realistic graphics that make it difficult to differentiate between a movie and a game. However, you need a top-notch gaming PC to render those rich textures and high-quality details to enjoy your games. In this regard, you must use a powerful processor, high-end graphics card, and a gaming monitor to play at high or ultra settings.

People are often confused when building their dream gaming PC. They consider different aspects of the build like customization, future upgrades, budget, and performance. However, people often leave an important concept when choosing a gaming monitor for their setup.

Modern Monitors are more complex than just displaying what the GPU processes. Instead, you must consider the specifications like PPI, DPI, resolution, refresh rate, and screen size. Wondering what’s the difference between Pixel density and resolution? Well, this article will clear all your doubts so that you can choose wisely.

What is pixel density?

Pixel density is the measure of the number of pixels per square inch of the display. It is also known as pixels per inch or PPi. The pixel density is what makes your display sharper, crisper, and richer. Generally, a monitor with more PPi and a smaller screen size is perfect for enjoying a high display quality.

You can calculate the PPi of your monitor by using this formula:

Nowadays, pixel density plays an important role in meeting the requirements of modern AAA games and HD media. The higher the pixel density, the better clarity you get in your media. Technologies like 2K, 4K, 8K, and so on utilize a high PPI screen to display life-like picture quality.

What is display resolution?

Resolution is the number of pixels available in each dimension of the screen i.e., width x height. So, it won’t be wrong to say that screen resolution is related to PPi and picture quality. For example, a 2560 x 1440 resolution means that the display has 2560 pixels in width and 1440 pixels in height. Generally, the higher the resolution, the better your gaming experience will be.

However, for the sake of simplicity, you must consider other aspects of your monitor for a perfect gaming experience. For instance, a 27-inch monitor with 3840 × 2160 (4K) resolution will have 163 PPi, the highest in the market. However, these monitors are also the most expensive ones. So, you can get one of these monitors if you prefer high-quality graphics, and your budget allows it.

Can you change the resolution?

In most PCs, the resolution is a variable setting that you can configure from the system settings. However, the settings can only go as high as the monitor supports, and the lower settings can be as low as 960 x 540. A higher screen resolution will show sharper images and higher display quality. However, the clarity depends on many other factors that you must consider before choosing a monitor for gaming.

So, why would someone reduce the resolution? The answer is simple, lower resolution consumes fewer system resources. For instance, if your GPU is bottlenecking the system, you must reduce the screen resolution to use your system. Similarly, if you experience lower or dropping FPS in the games, you can make them playable by reducing the screen resolution and lowering the graphics settings.

Ultra-wide VS. wide monitors:

In most cases, bigger isn’t always better. For instance, if you buy a monitor with a large display size but lower pixel density, you won’t experience true HD graphics. So, it won’t be wrong to say that when going for Ultra-wide displays, everything else must be bigger as well. Otherwise, a simple wide gaming monitor is sufficient to enjoy gaming at high graphics.
